The sun goes down as the Natives perform an intricate dance on the grounds of
Silver Springs. Once home to the Seminole and other Florida Native tribes,
Silver Springs now, annually, hosts a festival celebrating the heritage of the area and surrounding regions. In fact, the Native American Festival, usually held in November, features Natives from both North and South America. This provides visitors with the chance to absorb information and learn about different Native cultures from inside and outside the United States.
The Native American Festival at
Silver Springs is where you will see Natives perform a variety of traditional and ritual dances. These include the Hoop Dance, the Men's Northern Tradition Dance and the Women's Jingle Dress Dance. You can admire their ceremonial dress. You also have an opportunity to learn about the stories behind the dances and the rituals.
The Festival celebrates everything Native. Besides ritual dances, you can hear the stories of old, many of them centuries old. There are demonstrations of ancient Native craftwork. Watch them work on arts that hearken back to the early years of development.
Visitors can take part in a geology dig or an art contest. There are displays of various Native artifacts. It is an intensive and fun learning experience for the entire family. All events and demonstrations take place on the 350-acre park.
While at
Silver Springs, you may also take advantage of its other attractions. Take a ride aboard a glass-bottom boat to see the various water inhabitants, including alligators. Take your children to the petting zoo or wander along the wilderness trails.
