The Orlando Museum of Art was started by a group of enthusiastic artists who needed a meeting point to discuss, display and evaluate their work. Backed by the community, the Museum grew from a small art centre to a huge cultural institution which attracts 2 million visitors worldwide. Today it's considered to be one of the art museums and has its exhibits and programmes have featured in the top publications around the country.
The Museum, in its quest to enrich and preserve the visual arts, has concentrated on collections that are regional, national and international. It runs about 10-12 exhibitions on-site and around 13 offsite. Besides this it also implements art enrichment programmes, lectures, videos, educational programmes, workshops for teachers and studio classes. There are more than 700 volunteers who look after this services and programmes, making it a truly community effort.
The museum houses three types of collectibles which are on permanent display. The American collection showcases nearly 900 drawings, prints, sculptures and photographs spanning 3 centuries. The Art of Ancient Americans collection represents 30 different cultural groups from Northern, central and Southern America. The artefacts date back from 2000 B.C. to 1521 A.D and the collection includes ceramic, gold, cloth, stone and silver and clay articles.
The African Art collection is a small but very attractive collection of masks, metal work, wooden figures, beadwork, cloth, and carved ivory. These showcase the diversity of Africa as they come from different regions like Zulu, Yoruba, Cameroon, Baule and several others.
For adults there is a small entrance fee, while kids under 5 are admitted free. The museum is open on all days of the week. Do not miss the exhibitions of the museum if visiting Florida for the first time. From ancient artefacts to the present day visual arts, the museum has something for everybody.
